Canada Day Celebrations with HMCS Winnipeg in the Persian Gulf

June 24, 2005

OTTAWA, ON - A cast of Canadian artists are preparing for a military show tour, to celebrate Canada Day with the crew of HMCS Winnipeg deployed to the Persian Gulf.

Comedian extraordinaire Mike MacDonald will emcee the Persian Gulf Show Tour, presented by the Canadian Forces Personnel Support Agency (CFPSA). The tour features some of Canada's top musical artists such as The Ennis Sisters, Roddy Chiong, Tania Hancheroff, and former Canadian Idol performer Karen Lee Batten.

"This show tour has a tremendous line up of top Canadian talent that will go a long way in elevating the morale for the crew of HMCS Winnipeg," says Mark Larose, Manager Deployment Policies and Resources at CFPSA.

Producers Heather Wallace and Will Davis, of Destination Funny Entertainment Inc. in Vancouver, will be organizing the tour, which runs from June 27 to July 3.

The son of a Canadian Air Force officer, comedian Mike MacDonald has starred in national television shows and comedy specials. A crowd favourite, MacDonald is a well-known performer across North America.

The Ennis Sisters, Maureen, Karen, and Teresa, are Newfoundland natives who have been performing together since their early teens. Their first album won them the Juno Award for "Best New Country Group" in 2002.

World-class fiddler Roddy Chiong has toured with Shania Twain and Celine Dion. In addition to his musical talents, Chiong also stars in theatre, film and television.

Canadian singer/songwriter Tania Hancheroff has an incredible voice and strong stage presence. The Vancouver native is one of Canada's most respected and sought-after talents.

Former Canadian Idol cast member Karen Lee Batten is a British Columbia native who began performing at the age of four. Her diverse range of musical genres includes country, rock, jazz, pop, R & B, and gospel.

CFPSA has a long tradition of providing show tours to CF personnel serving overseas and in isolated locations. Over the course of a six-month rotation, a CF Show Tour plays an important part in major operations and is always a big morale booster, bringing a small piece of Canada to deployed personnel.
