Aiden Duncan

Aiden is a Cree two-spirit artist from Manitoba who moved to the Yukon to work in conservation and to share Indigenous knowledge. Aiden incorporates Indigenous knowledge sharing and practices through art, dance, and storytelling. His spirit name is ka mâhmâsinasohkôhow, which means "spotted owl" in Cree.

Design: One Story

“I call this piece One Story. It represents a reminder of each individual’s experience with residential schools. Sometimes I think people forget that residential schools are still impacting Indigenous youth today. I suffer from a loss of culture due to my grandmother attending Indian day school. Her favourite animal was the hummingbird. This design represents her and every single person’s story as a reminder that every story is different and every child matters.”

Jay Joseph is Wet’suwet’en hobbyist/freelance artist living on unceded Sḵwx̱w.7mesh and səl̓ilwətaɬ land in British Columbia, Canada. They are a 2024 Capilano University 2D Anim/Visdev graduate and member of the Likhts’amisyu (Fireweed) Clan.

Jay has had a passion for artwork and animation ever since they were a child and has been learning their own nation’s formline art under family guidance since 2021. One of their passions is drawing formline designs that blend traditional elements with modern media and franchises, such as video game and animation characters. They also enjoy creating formline designs that feature non-traditional or unconventional animals and creatures. Driven by a deep passion for animation and artwork, Jay has chosen to maintain a healthy boundary between their creativity and income. This decision has led them to pursue a career as a freelance artist rather than entering the industry.

Wolves are family-oriented animals with great significance across many Pacific Northwest Nations, and a long history of being misunderstood. In this design, a young wolf pup is surrounded by generations of family members. The wolves are howling to carry a message of healing through these generations and pass along their hope for positive, meaningful change
