Answers to common questions regarding the transition of the CANEX Home Heating Program.
General Transition Questions
Why is the CANEX Home Heating Program changing?
After many years of successful partnership, Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels and Island Petroleum are no longer suppliers for the CANEX Home Heating Program. , Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels and Island Petroleum will continue to offer home heating services to existing customers under a new program called Heat For Heroes. CANEX is accepting applications from Canadian oil companies who wish to be considered as an oil supplier for the CANEX Home Heating Program. Once new suppliers are in place, CANEX will email eligible members in serviced areas, CANEX will also announce the new program on our social media channels.
When will the transition occur?
The partnership officially ends September 1st, 2026.
Who will be the new oil supplier?
CANEX is currently accepting applications from interested home heating oil companies. Once the new supplier(s) and program details have been confirmed, all oil program members will be notified.
Will my home heating service be interrupted?
No. CANEX and Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels and Island Petroleum are committed to ensuring a seamless transition with minimal disruption to members. Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels and Island Petroleum will continue to honor the fuel savings discount for members who choose to remain with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum for their home heating needs and can expect the same great customer service.
Do I need to do anything right now?
No action is required. When a new CANEX Home Heating Oil partnership is launched, Members will receive an email outlining their options and any necessary steps to follow if they are interested in learning more about the new supplier.
Will my CANEX member discount continue?
Yes, Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels and Island Petroleum will continue to honour discounted rates under a new program named "Heat for Heroes". Feel free to contact Ultramar, Island Petroleum, Bluewave Energy, or Columbia Fuels for more details.

Will my pricing change?
Once CANEX has launched a partnership with a new supplier(s), members will be emailed about any pricing changes and available options. In the meantime, Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels and Island Petroleum will continue to honour its customer discount and Members can stay with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum with no obligation to change to the new CANEX Home Heating Program partner.
Will I need to sign a new agreement with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum?
You may need to do so with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum, we recommend you reach out to them (See contact info below). If you decide to use the new CANEX program supplier in the future, yes you will likely need to enter into a new agreement with that provider.

Choosing to Stay or Switch
Am I required to switch suppliers?
No. Members will have the option to remain with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum or transition to the new CANEX Home Heating Program supplier. Information regarding the process and timelines will be emailed and posted on social media once the new oil program has launched.
Can I remain with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum if I choose?
Yes. Members may choose to continue their relationship with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum. Additional information regarding any CANEX program benefits available through the new supplier will be shared once details are finalized.
Is there a deadline to decide whether I stay with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum or move to the new supplier?
No. Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels and Island Petroleum will continue to honour customer discounts indefinitely under their Heat of Heros program.
What happens if I do nothing?
Nothing changes. You will remain with your current supplier and continue receiving your discount.
If I choose to switch suppliers, who will help me through the process?
CANEX is committed to providing members with the support they need throughout the new process. Members can also email canexhhp@cfmws.com for additional guidance from a Member Care Customer Service Agent..
Account Questions
What happens to my Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum account?
Members will have the option to either:
- Remain with your current supplier; or
- Transition to the new CANEX supplier once announced.
Additional details regarding the transition process and any required actions will be emailed and posted on social media once finalized.
What if I still owe money on my Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum account?
Members who choose to remain with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum will continue managing their accounts directly with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum in accordance with their existing agreements. Members who choose to transition to the new supplier will receive information regarding any billing, account, or contractual considerations that may apply directly from Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum.
Will I receive a final bill from Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum?
Final settlements will be required should you choose to move to a new vendor as part of the new CANEX Home Heating program. This is something you will need to arrange with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum when the time comes.
What happens to credits on my account?
Credits on account will be refunded by Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum if the account is cancelled.
Budget Plan Questions
What happens to my Budget Plan account?
The impact on Budget Plan accounts will depend on whether a member chooses to remain with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum or transition to the new supplier. More information will be provided as transition details are finalized.
Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels and Island Petroleum have advised that if an account is cancelled:
- Any outstanding Budget Plan balance must be paid in full
- The balance will appear on the next statement cycle.
- Any credit balance will be refunded.
Equipment Questions
I rent a water heater from Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum. What happens now?
Members who rent a water heater from Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum may have different options depending on whether they remain with them or transition to the new supplier.
Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels and Island Petroleum have advised that options could include:
- Continuing the rental agreement with service provider.
- Purchasing the equipment.
- Having the equipment removed (subject to any applicable contractual terms or penalties).
Additional details will be communicated once the new program is launched. Until then, you can contact your supplier directly for any answers you may need.
I financed heating equipment through Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum. What happens now?
Members with financed equipment should continue to meet their obligations under their financing agreement.
Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels and Island Petroleum have advised that if equipment financing is impacted by a transition, any outstanding financed balance may need to be paid in full. Additional information will be provided once the new program is launched. Until then, you can contact your supplier directly for any answers you may need.
Service Plan Questions
I have a service plan with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum. What happens to it?
Members who remain with Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels or Island Petroleum may continue under their existing service plan arrangements. For members choosing to transition to the new supplier, the impact on service plans is not yet defined. Until the service plan process has been defined, you can contact your supplier directly for any answers you may need.
Will I receive a refund for my service plan?
Ultramar, Bluewave Energy, Columbia Fuels and Island Petroleum have advised that service plans are typically non-refundable. However, each situation will be reviewed by their Service Team to determine whether a credit may apply. Contact your supplier directly for any answers need.
